With the help of handsome journalist Steve Dawes, charming firefighter Declan McCarthy, and a few spells, Katie and Aunt Lucy stir up some toil and trouble to clear Ben's name and find the real killer..

My Review:
With endearing characters and a well-developed plot, this debut novel in Bailey Cate's new Magical Bakery Mystery series is sure to delight cozy mystery fans! Katie Lightfoot has spent her entire life feeling as though she never truly belonged....anywhere. Following a break-up and a need for a fresh start, Katie leaves behind her bakery job in Akron, Ohio to join her aunt and uncle in a Savannah, Georgia where they establish the Honeybee Bakery. Just as Katie begins to feel a sense of belonging not only is a town's prominent figure murdered outside the Honeybee prior to its grand opening, but also Katie's Aunt proceeds to explain that Katie is a descendent of a long line of witches...really? With assistance from her Aunt's "Book Club" members, Katie sets out to uncover the true identity of the murderer and clear her Uncle of any further suspicion. Filled with twists and turns, and a wide array of possible suspects, Brownies and Broomsticks, was such a fun read! The characters were very well-developed and I just love the Book Club members, particularly Mimsy and her array of colors! And, the unpredictability of the plot itself kept me reading in anticipation of the next page. Very well done and I easily give this a FIVE! I'm now looking forward to reading the second book in this new series, Bewitched, Bothered, and Biscotti.

Review: Farm Fresh Murder By Paige Shelton

Series:  A Farmer's Market Mystery Book #1
Length:  304 pages
Publisher:  Berkley; First Edition edition
Publication Date: April 6, 2010
ISBN-10 0425233871
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Farm Fresh Murder (A Farmers' Market Mystery, #1)
Book Description:
First in the Farmer's Market Mystery Series.

Becca Robins leads a simple life, making jams and preserves on her very own farm. But when there's a murder in her quaint little town, she puts herself in the line of fire to defend her friend's innocence-and goes from making jam to being in one.

My Review:
Life at Bailey's Farmer's Market is about to change when a local peach grower is found murdered and one of the old-timers tops the list of suspects.  But local berry farmer and jam maker, Becca Robinson is convinced that her friend and market mentor, Abner, may be a cranky old man at times and a bit secretive, but he is no murderer.  Filled with captivating characters and plenty of red herrings throughout, this first installment of the Farmer's Market Mystery series is simply a very enjoyable read!  I absolutely love the setting and concept for this series, and of course the inclusion of recipes makes for a sweet added bonus.  Paige Shelton has created an outstanding cozy mystery with so many twists and turns that I was left guessing until the very end.  Becca's character is very well-developed and although a bit tenacious and bold, she comes across the pages as very real... and very likable.  Of course, as an avid jam maker and home canning enthusiast myself, I may be a bit biased but I found this to be a perfect summer read...a country setting, farmers, fresh fruits and vegetables, canning recipes, and of course a murder..what more could you ask for?  Certainly one of the best cozy mysteries that I have read yet and I can't wait to read the next installment in this wonderfully fresh series and once again meet up with the farmers at Bailey's.  FIVE stars.

No one believed I was destined for greatness.

Acclaimed author C. W. Gortner envisages the turbulent early years of a woman whose mythic rise to power would go on to transform a monarchy, a nation, and the world.

Review: Buried In A Bog By Shelia Connolly

Series: A County Cork Mystery (Book 1)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: February 5, 2013
ISBN-10: 0425251896
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Buried in a Bog (A County Cork Mystery, #1)
Book Description:
National bestselling and Agatha Award-nominated author Sheila Connolly introduces a brand-new series set in a small village in County Cork, Ireland, where buried secrets are about to rise to the surface...

Honoring the wish of her late grandmother, Maura Donovan visits the small Irish village where her Gran was born—though she never expected to get bogged down in a murder mystery. Nor had she planned to take a job in one of the local pubs, but she finds herself excited to get to know the people who knew her Gran.

In the pub, she’s swamped with drink orders as everyone in town gathers to talk about the recent discovery of a nearly one-hundred-year-old body in a nearby bog. When Maura realizes she may know something about the dead man—and that the body’s connected to another, more recent, death—she fears she’s about to become mired in a homicide investigation. After she discovers the death is connected to another from almost a century earlier, Maura has a sinking feeling she may really be getting in over her head...

Review:
In this debut to her new series, Connolly has captured the essence of Ireland's countryside with her attention to detail and culture. And, her cast of heart-warming characters are sure to charm any reader! As Maura Donavan struggles with her own grief of losing her grandmother and fulfilling her final wish, she suddenly finds herself in the small Irish village of Leap suddenly surrounded by people who are genuinely concerned for her well-being. But who would want to harm Maura Donavan? Could her encounter with danger be related to the two recently discovered deaths since her arrival? Filled with unpredictable suspense and plenty of red-herrings throughout, Connolly had me reading well into the late evening hours. I simply fell in love with the elderly characters, Bridget and Billy, with their Irish tales and wisdom of the old days. I sincerely hope these two will play a role in future books in this series. Very well written and one that I would recommend to fans of cozy mysteries...Four stars!

Review: The First Rule Of Swimming By Courtney Angela Brkic

Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Release Date: May 28, 2013
ISBN-10: 0316217387
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
The First Rule of Swimming
Book Description:
A woman must leave her island home to search for her missing sister-and confront the haunted history of her family.

Magdalena does not panic when she learns that her younger sister has disappeared. A free-spirit, Jadranka has always been prone to mysterious absences. But when weeks pass with no word, Magdalena leaves the isolated Croatian island where their family has always lived and sets off to New York to find her sister. Her search begins to unspool the dark history of their family, reaching back three generations to a country torn by war.

A haunting and sure-footed debut by an award-winning writer, The First Rule of Swimming explores the legacy of betrayal and loss in a place where beauty is fused inextricably with hardship, and where individuals are forced to make wrenching choices as they are swept up in the tides of history.

My Thoughts:
Courtney Angela Brkic has created a beautiful literary gem to behold set against the background of the small Croatian island of Rosmarina; a character within itself  with its weathered buildings, olive groves, salt air and the innate ability to capture the heart and soul of its inhabitants.  Through the years, the tiny island home has seen its fair share of war and political upheaval, causing some to flee while others stand firmer and cling to their island heritage.  Spanning three generations, The First Rule Of Swimming, explores this island heritage as well as the love and devotion between siblings, and the lengths each would go to in order to  protect the other.  The story itself is beautifully told from the perspective of various family members and travels back in time with each member providing one more piece to the puzzle.  Ultimately, this is a story of love and forgiveness, and reconciling the past that is simultaneously beautiful and heart-breaking.  With this debut novel, Brkic has proven herself to be a very unique and refreshing literary voice.  The First Rule Of Swimming would be an excellent book club choice and a perfect choice for summer reading as well.  I would highly recommend this book and easily give this a FIVE!

My Thoughts:
The Cuckoos Of Batch Magna is one of those rare literary gifts that left me in complete awe! Set against the background of a rural English village that rests between the borders of England and the Welsh Marshes, The Cuckoos Of Batch Magna is a delightful and charming novel filled with the most endearing and often humorous characters you will ever encounter.  However, one of the most admired qualities of this novel, is the author's wonderful insight and attention to detail throughout.  I felt as though I was swept away only to find myself  walking the paths of Batch Magna amid the company of these charming characters.  British author, Peter Maughan is truly a gifted storyteller with a unique talent for detail and a wonderful sense of British humor.  If your looking for a great summer read, you won't be disappointed with this one!  I highly recommend The Cuckoos Of Batch Magna and easily give it FIVE stars!  This is the first in a series of Batch Magna tales and I look forward to reading more.

Review: The Corpse Reader By Antonio Garrido

Paperback: 494 pages
Publisher: AmazonCrossing
Release Date: May 28, 2013
ISBN-10: 1612184367
Genre: Historical Fiction
The Corpse Reader
About The Book:
After his grandfather dies, avid scholar and budding forensic investigator Cí Song begrudgingly gives up his studies to help his family. But when another tragedy strikes, he’s forced to run and also deemed a fugitive. Dishonored, he has no choice but to accept work as a lowly gravedigger, a position that allows him to sharpen his corpse-reading skills. Soon, he can deduce whether a person killed himself—or was murdered.

His prowess earns him notoriety, and Cí receives orders to unearth the perpetrator of a horrific series of mutilations and deaths at the Imperial Court. Cí’s gruesome investigation quickly grows complicated thanks to old loyalties and the presence of an alluring, enigmatic woman. But he remains driven by his passion for truth—especially once the killings threaten to take down the Emperor himself.

Inspired by Song Cí, considered to be the founding father of CSI-style forensic science, this harrowing novel set during the thirteenth-century Tsong Dynasty draws readers into a multilayered, ingenious plot as disturbing as it is fascinating.

My Thoughts:
Antonio Garrido has proven himself to be a very talented storyteller with magnificent attention to historical detail!  Set against the backdrop of China's ancient Tsong Dynasty, The Corpse Reader is a fast-paced, action-packed historical thriller that follows the forensic investigations of Ci Song from outlying villages in to the Imperial Court itself.  Garrido has provided a great deal of historical detail that captivated me from the very first page and held my attention until the very end.  The character of Ci Song is very well-developed and, as a reader, I felt that I personally shared each tragedy and triumph along his journey.  Garrdio offers an intriguing fictional account of the early developments of crime scene forensics that still appear even today.  A very unique and original story that I would highly recommend to fans of historical fiction and crime thrillers alike.  Four stars!

Review: Train To Nowhere By Kay Bratt

File Size: 234 KB
Print Length: 49 pages
Publisher: Red Thread Publishing Group
Release Date: November 10, 2012
ASIN: B00A5QN1SM
Genres: Historical Fiction, China, Novella
Train to Nowhere
Book Description:
In 1967, while millions in China are unfairly persecuted because of their livelihood or heritage, others join the Cultural Revolution to pledge allegiance to a leader who is considered a legend to some and a tyrant to others. Mao's revolution is sweeping across the country, leaving many competing to show their loyalty with actions that will leave scars for decades. Even more traumatic than the destruction of art, books, and historic architecture, families are torn apart as they struggle to find a way to survive the upheaval.

Ling, a sheltered and devoted daughter, is forced to join the feared Red Guards, a strategy concocted by her mother to ensure her protection. But for this scheme to work, Ling must hold her secrets close and trust no one. Her journey has only just begun when she is faced with a moment of truth that will impact the future she has unwillingly chosen on the Train to Nowhere.

My Thoughts:
In this short novella, Kay Bratt has certainly captured the uncertainty and fear that affected so many during China's Cultural Revolution.  Fearing for her daughter's safety, Ling's mother makes the difficult choice of insisting that her daughter join the ranks of the Red Guard; the same group that has instilled so much fear and anxiety into Ling's family. Against her wishes and own personal beliefs, Ling puts on her green attire and boards the train for Bejing with a growing number of other Red Guards.  Is Ling the only one hiding behind this mask of loyalty to Mao, or are there others like her who are doing what has to be done to ensure their own safety?  Placing her confidences in another is not only risky, but could bring her a great amount of anguish and pain.  She can trust no one.  However, during her journey, Ling is faced with making the difficult decision of following her own beliefs and continuing in the footsteps of a false identity.  Doing what you believe to be right is not necessarily the easiest choice to make.  Kay Bratt is a wonderfully, gifted storyteller with a talent for capturing the heart of humanity.  This was a truly a thought-provoking and enjoyable read.  Four Stars!

Review & Giveaway: Roses Have Thorns By Sandra Byrd

Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Howard Books; Original edition
Release Date: April 9, 2013
ISBN-10: 1439183163
Genre: Historical Fiction
Roses Have Thorns: A Novel of Elizabeth I (Ladies in Waiting #3)
About The Book:
From the acclaimed author of To Die For comes a stirring novel told that sheds new light on Elizabeth I and her court. Sandra Byrd has attracted countless fans for evoking the complexity, grandeur, and brutality of the Tudor period. In her latest tour de force, she poses the question: What happens when serving a queen may cost you your marriage—or your life?

In 1565, seventeen-year-old Elin von Snakenborg leaves Sweden on a treacherous journey to England. Her fiance has fallen in love with her sister and her dowry money has been gambled away, but ahead of her lies an adventure that will take her to the dizzying heights of Tudor power. Transformed through marriage into Helena, the Marchioness of Northampton, she becomes the highest-ranking woman in Elizabeth’s circle. But in a court that is surrounded by Catholic enemies who plot the queen’s downfall, Helena is forced to choose between an unyielding monarch and the husband she’s not sure she can trust—a choice that will provoke catastrophic consequences.

Vividly conjuring the years leading up to the beheading of Mary Queen of Scots, Roses Have Thorns is a brilliant exploration of treason, both to the realm and to the heart.

My Thoughts:
In this third installment of her Ladies In Waiting Series, Sandra Byrd has certainly proven herself to be a very gifted an talented historical writer.   Elin von Snakenborg is quickly an endearing and strong female character set against the backdrop of Tudor life and turmoil  just prior to the death of Elizabeth 1.  Byrd captures not only the essence of Tudor life, but also the intimacy of friendship among the women surrounding Elizabeth 1.  Elegantly written with thoughtful prose throughout, Roses Have Thorns, is sure to delight fans of Historical Fiction.  I was truly immersed with this story and its various sub-plots and easily found myself swept away between the pages until the early morning hours. I would most certainly recommend this novel and easily give it four stars!

About the author:
